Ashleigh Smith The Atlantic Equipment Project

We would like to introduce Ashleigh Smith from the Atlantic Equipment Project, another of the speakers at the Leitrim Design House 2017 Conference.

Ashleigh wAdventure+Equipment+Wild+Atlantic+Way+Backpack+Satchelho was a competitive surfer team in her teens, studied product design and technology in college and undertook a two-year MSc programme in integrated product design in the Netherlands Ashleigh now designs amazing bags. Her surfing background influences her designs and the gorgeous bags and satchels produced by the AE Project combine Ireland’s coastal and surfing heritage with hardwearing, natural fabrics. As Ashleigh is a product designer, each design is developed through the classic industrial design process. Designs emerge from concept drawings and are transformed into functional design led products. The canvas used in the satchels, backpacks and totes is a heavy duty Duck Canvas. Duck Canvas has been used for centuries in the sea faring trades for it tough quality and its naturally water resistant properties. The business, which is based in Strandhill, sells through its website and in selected shops in Ireland and abroad. Ashleigh has a great story to tell and will share her journey with us Sat February 11th

‘This project is one of the many results of 6 years of classical Industrial Design study and work, lots of years of bodyboarding, surfing and muddy salty adventure amongst the rainy, windy beauty of my home, the West of Ireland.’
