11 Aug National Heritage Week 2017 at the Leitrim Design House
Each year, during the last week of August, many national and hundreds of local community organisations participate in Heritage Week by organising events throughout the country highlighting the abundance of great work that is carried out in all communities in Ireland to preserve and promote our natural, built and cultural heritage.
The Leitrim Design House is delighted to welcome two very talented local artists on Saturday 26th August to demonstrate two very diverse crafts. Admission is free. Just pop in any time between 2 and 4pm.
Seamus Dunbar, who is based in Manorhamilton and is co- founder of The Leitrim Sculpture Centre will demonstrate the ancient art of stone letter cutting. Cutting inscriptions in stone is an important part of the stone-carvers craft which has been elevated to an art form in its own right. Frances Crowe from Four Mile House, Co Roscommon will demonstrate the art of weaving. The art of handwoven tapestry is many thousands of years old and, in that time the technique has remained virtually unchanged. Learn about the skills & techniques involved. Be inspired to try your hand at these wonderful crafts!
National Heritage Week is coordinated by The Heritage Council and its aim is to build awareness and education about our heritage thereby encouraging its conservation and preservation.
