Brigid Birney’s unique figurative abstract style has gained her many influential admirers and collectors of her work, both here and in the UK. She exhibits in the Leitrim Design House, Carrick on Shannon; the Bold Art Gallery, Galway; and Clan Art Gallery, Enniskillen, Northern Ireland.
Her love of Art took over from Graphic Design & in recent years she has combined a role of mother with creating works of art primarily in acrylic & oils. Brigid’s approach to painting which is first observation based followed in many cases by painting from memory & this allows her the freedom in the application of paints while creating a vibrant energy within the painting. Recent figurative works are inspired by her love of people watching their different poses & expressions.
Amazing, fantastic, colourful, vibrant were just some of the words used to describe Brigid Birney’s new art works at her new art studio in Kinlough, Co. Leitrim.
‘I observe first, and then paint from memory. I would describe my work as “spontaneous and vibrant, visions inspired by reality and enhanced with fantasy“. My approach to painting is firstly observation-based, followed in many cases by painting from memory. This allows me freedom in the application of paint, while at the same time creating a vibrant energy within the painting. My recent figurative works are inspired by my love of people – watching their different poses and expressions. I like to mix realism with the abstract.’
Originally from Donegal, Brigid studied Graphic Design at Letterkenny Institute of Technology from 1987 – 1991. Her love of Art took over from Graphic Design & in recent years she has combined a role of mother with creating works of art primarily in acrylic & oils.
In the quiet countryside outside Kinlough in the north of the county, surrounded by her family, Brigid Birney works from home. Her kitchen alternates as her studio and is indeed the heart and hub of the household. Working alongside her children, painting and mothering compliment each other. There is no division of roles, no division of time. Her home is a haven of creativity. Brigid has exhibited extensively throughout Ireland and her work has been featured in various interior design magazines, including Ireland’s Home’s Interiors and Living and Upstairs Downstairs.
Colour, light and movement encapsulate Brigid’s work. Under the guidance of her magic hands, flowers burst open with their natural beauty and display their grandeur. Pulsating with energy, an oasis in the desert, vigorous, vital, Brigid’s paintings are a feast for the eyes.
Her work was selected to hang on the walls of well renowned chef Neven Maguire’s “MacNean House and Restaurant”, when the revamped their Restaurant in 2007, and since then Brigid has continued to hang and vary the work in their Restaurant, Dining Room and in a Gallery upstairs. This was really an honour and since only her work hangs there, the same atmosphere and theme runs throughout the building.
Her work hangs in private and public collections both here, including the Office of Public Works, and throughout the UK, and America. Among her collectors are Thomas P. O’Neill, the former Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts and son of the late Tip O’Neill, former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Mr Brian Schweitzer, Governor of Montana, and Mr Abdullah Buhindi, Managing Director of the Buhindi Group, Bahrain.
