Silk art from the shoreline

The Leitrim Design House is excited to welcome a new exhibition to ARTWALLSilk art from the shoreline, through the woods and down to the lake’ by textile artist Karen O’Kane. This exhibition will be on view from May 31st to July 29th.

Painted by Karen in her County Donegal studio, these unique colourful silk paintings have been inspired by her love of the natural environment. Karen hand paints silk with a cold resist technique, steaming it for colour fastness. She then uses the steamed silk to produce a vast range of work. To compliment her original collection, Karen also prints her silk paintings onto bamboo material using eco dyes at a specialised printer in County Donegal. Her collection includes original paintings; statement floor lights; lampshades and silk accessories for the home.

Karen comes from the Potteries in England where her grandmother, a skilled artist, introduced her to a wide variety of crafts. This early access to creativity was a major influence in her life and she continued to use these crafts in her work as a psychologist before settling in Ramelton, Co Donegal where she established Koko Designs Studio in 2010. Koko Design Studio offers a bespoke interior design service for residential and commercial interior design projects.

Education has also played a large part in Karen’s career. As well as running workshops in her studio, Karen facilitates workshops in the community. She is also on the Education Panel of the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland and facilitates both the CRAFTED programme in national schools and the Design Skills in secondary schools in County Donegal.

While enjoying this exhibition why not also drop in to our Meet the Maker event on Saturday June 1st from 2pm – 4pm. Talented Leitrim potter Bairbre Kennedy from Lichen ceramics will showcase her skills on the pottery wheel. Meet Bairbre, hear about her process of working and browse her display of finished pieces. Bairbre creates unique hand thrown stoneware pottery, as well as more whimsical pieces designed to bring a smile to your face. The Leitrim Design House is currently showing Bairbre’s new Round tower collection in our beautiful craft gallery. This collection was inspired by a remembered journey, a dream from an idyllic summer spent floating along the Shannon to Clonmacnoise. ‘Arriving the way historical travellers would have, by the river but seen though the magical eyes of childhood. A remembered dream, filled with the stories my Dad taught me of the place. The love of history and place, the deep ties of our past through the things like round towers and Ogham that are unique to us, carved into the edges of stone and into us.

Save the date! To celebrate Cruinninu na nOg, Fuinseog Woodland Crafts will present ‘The Bemusement Games’ from 2 pm – 4pm Saturday June 15th!.
