Local wood turner is featured maker at The Leitrim Design House
This July the Leitrim Design House features Roy Humphreys, one of our very talented makers. Roy is a self- taught wood turner. What started out as a hobby for Roy developed into a business over a 20 year period. Using all native timber sourced mainly from the family farm, bowls, candle holders, lamps, tables and other interesting sculpted pieces are carefully designed and created in a converted granary beside Roy’s home outside of Mohill. Ash Alder Beech & Bog Oak being his favourite woods to work with. He is the 4th generation of the Humphreys family working with wood.
Roy shares some of his proces and inspiration; Raw edge bowls can be quite challenging to make as the bark can be quite brittle on the seasoned timber. During the shaping process it is necessary to add stability to the bark in order to give a satisfactory finish. Inspiration comes from the texture of a piece of wood and my vision of what I can create from it taking into consideration the size and shape of a particular piece of raw material. I am fortunate to be part of a family who have been working in the timber business for several generations and this has led me to appreciate and value the importance of caring for our many home-grown timbers.
Roy’s advice to those of you who may be interested in trying your hand at woodturning is sharp tools lots of practice and patience!
The Leitrim Design House increasingly strives to showcase County Leitrim as a creative destination by nurturing and supporting local small creative businesses. Each month we highlight one of our very talented makers.
