Our featured maker for the month of August is Giolla Liddy of Artwood.
Giolla Liddy, together with his family run Artwood. Based in the West of Ireland Artwood is a creative business making unique, hand-crafted, life-long, wooden gifts.
Giolla says; “I really enjoy working with wood and other natural materials and love to see them move from raw material to the finished piece. As a small business we have the capacity to express our ideals through what we make. We strive to create beautiful, natural, high-quality, long-lasting pieces. In order to do this we select materials that live up to these standards. Where possible I like to seek out native, interesting woods with burrs and spalts in them so that each piece I make is unique. My favourite part of the process is when I have cut and sanded the wood, I then wipe it down and that’s when you first see the grain, the beauty of the wood is revealed. “
Artwood itself has been going since 2014 but Giolla has always been a woodworker. His father was a carpenter and artist and from a young age he would help him out in the workshop and learned everything from him, just like he did from his dad. Together, they made beautiful furniture, fitted kitchens and other pieces that people requested.
Together with his partner Emily, Giolla came up with the idea of Suncatchers. He made a few and tried them out at a local Christmas market. The response was so positive so they kept going, continually improving and enhancing them.
