The Leitrim Design House are delighted to launch an exhibition of landscape paintings titled ‘The Memory of Water’ by Leitrim based artist Maria Noonan-McDermott on ARTWALL on Friday 31st of January at 6.30pm. With a love of folklore and story-telling, Noonan-McDermott’s influences lie in rural Ireland. It is in these magical places that share a colloquial history where stories and the people are often found ingrained into the landscape.
The inspiration for this solo exhibition on ARTWALL titled ‘The Memory of Water’ comes from Maria’s affinity for water. It fills the artist with a sense of calm and clarity so much so she can’t imagine living any distance from it. Luckily, living in the North West of Ireland she’s just a stone’s throw away from an abundance of sacred surroundings, rivers, loughs and coastlines.
The artist’s strong connection with water originates from childhood memories as she states; Water is a spiritual element that has always played a vital role in my life, keeping me grounded. Whether it was jumping in puddles and playing in the rain as a child, spending summer holidays swimming in our local river or exploring the beautiful beaches with my family, this deep connection has never left me. The special bond I had with my late Father, a radio officer in the merchant navy, who when returning home would fill our heads with fantastical tales of journeys across the sea, is something that will always be with me.
Originally from Donegal, Maria Noonan McDermott now lives and works from her studio in North Leitrim. She began her artistic career in Dublin in 1985 and qualified in Fashion and Design. Maria later returned to college to study Fine Art. Painting mainly with a palette knife and heavily influenced by the impressionist movement, her work often focuses on the study of light and form in Irish landscapes.
Maria Noonan-McDermott’s work is represented by galleries in Dublin, Clare, Sligo, Donegal, Leitrim and Fermanagh. Her paintings are also held in many private and corporate collections throughout Ireland, the UK and across Europe and America.
