Connecting Cultures through Craft @The Leitrim Design House
Textile & Mixed media workshops June 9th – September 15th 2023
The Leitrim Design House has a long history of reaching out to new communities through creative engagement. The purpose of the many multi-cultural projects we’ve facilitated is to enhance understanding and respect between the many different nationalities and cultures now living in Leitrim.
Connecting Cultures through Craft is a series of 12 textile workshops led by experienced textile artist Catherine Gray currently underway. Through funding from Creative Ireland Creative Communities Programme we offered the Ukrainian community living in the region the opportunity for self-expression and to connect and explore their creativity in a relaxed environment. This project is providing this group of individuals with an interactive and creative medium to explore their own inner world and as an outlet of self-expression. These textile & mixed media workshops introduces a variety of processes and materials to develop their skills and helps to deepen friendship, trust and mutual respect among the group in a supportive environment.
Participants are invited to include fabrics or materials that have personal meaning from their own culture that tell their own unique story or that have importance to them, that they may wish to incorporate into their work. The theme of the project will be developed in collaboration with the participants allowing their own voice to shine through.
Each participant will develop their own individual piece of textile work(s) and also contribute to a larger piece made together with the whole group. The end results will be celebrated in the form of an exhibition in The Leitrim Design House with a reception launch with this community, taking place on Friday September 22nd Culture night 2023. We’re grateful for the support of the Leitrim County Council Arts Office and we hope the local community will come along meet, greet & support the budding artists.
