For this year’s Culture Night, we’re excited to welcome a wonderful lineup of artists to The Leitrim Design House, with demonstrations throughout the evening and a selection of work created during our summer sustainable textile and print workshops on display.

Join us on the 18th September from 4pm to 7pm for an evening of making, demonstrations and conversation with the artists. All demos are free with no booking required.

Explore Hedges & the Printed Word 4pm to 6pm

Join Leitrim artist Vicky Crawford in exploring our hedgerows through print, and include words inspired by them. Hedgerows not only mark the boundaries of our community but also are part of our community. They are our natural neighbours, as much as the animals that inhabit them. A hedge is a community of trees and shrubs working together to define countless tiny worlds. So there’s tons to explore! Drop by for this interactive demonstration and work together with the artist from 4pm until 6pm. Children are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult

Needle Felting 5pm -7pm 18yrs and upwards

Belinda Reid will demonstrate making 3D needle felted flower pots, which is the process of using wires and a special barbed needle to work and shape 100% wool until it meshes together to create a felt. 18yr olds & upwards can join in and try their hand at this delicate craft work. Belinda is a felt artist creating textile artworks from wool, contemporary wearables and functional felt pieces. As a member of Feltmakers Ireland, she will have work on display on ARTWALL in The Leitrim Design House in their group show, which is an added benefit for audiences to meet the current exhibiting artists.

Wet Felting 5pm – 7pm 8yr olds and upwards

Karen Bowden will demonstrate how to create a wet felted flower with added beads. Wet felting is an ancient craft, combining wool, water and friction to create a strong, soft and environmentally friendly fabric. Karen will use merino wool on the night and will also bring along a selection of different wools to show the participants the differences and suitability of fleece for wet felting. Karen finds inspiration in the process of making, whether creating unique felted pieces, designing patterns, experimenting with hand-dyed yarns or working with wool in its many forms. As the founder of Fabulous Fibres, her aim is to share knowledge and inspiration and encourage creativity through traditional techniques with a contemporary twist. 8 yr olds an upwards will have fabulous flowery fun with Karen on Culture Night
