Join us this Saturday October 10th at 12pm for the reception launch of ‘Blooming Gorgeous’, a new exhibition by Leitrim artist Laura Burke on ARTWALL. The daughter of renowned Irish illustrator Jeanette Dunne, Laura is a published book illustrator and graphic designer under the title ‘PookaDubh’. Laura’s personal art projects embrace themes of femininity, mythology, fantasy and nature. In her work for children (and those who never grew up!) she creates bold colourful and funny tongue in cheek artwork that will make you smile just like her character designs.
The artist is also known as ‘Loki’ for her practice of street art, graffiti and mural work and a member of ‘The MINAW collective’, a female led street art and mural artist collective featuring Ireland’s most prominent female and non-binary artists in that field. As an impaired artist living with disability, she has embraced and harnessed modern technology to aid her ability to create art. Taking modern illustration and art which these days are typically viewed through a screen into the tangible world of the gallery space. The artwork in her latest exhibition is inspired from her time in recovery looking out the window to her own garden. This collection of illustrations and paintings at The Leitrim Design House celebrate the quiet beauty of nature, tamed and wild, by blending old traditional artistic techniques with modern technologies and tools.
Using natural eco-friendly locally sourced materials, mixed with modern manmade art supplies, to create a series of nostalgic, graphic, dopamine inducing, landscape colour studies. This collection includes a selection of whimsical, layered paper cut watercolour illustrations and a collection of drawings subtly etched and burnt onto wood. Images are imagined personifications of the beloved flowers from her garden and a visual love letter to the humble Irish garden.
Laura is a multidisciplinary artist, designer and photographer whose work brings creativity and visual storytelling to events, musicians, bands and performers. Her practice spans bespoke artwork, illustration created for a diverse range of spaces including venues, restaurants, lifestyle stores, ecological parks and well-being centres. With a distinctive and imaginative approach, Laura has collaborated with a range of recognised brands and organisations, including RTÉ, BBC, Adidas, Champion Sports, Absolut and Coca-Cola, among others.
Working as an artist for over 20 years, Laura’s artwork has been featured in various book and magazine publications, television broadcasts, exhibitions, festivals and events across Ireland, UK, Europe and the Middle East.
