As part of August Craft Month 2022 and to celebrate Heritage Week, we had some exciting Maker events for members of the public to see two skilled crafters demonstrate their work.
Visitors had the chance to participate, observe and learn from talented craft makers Bairbre Kennedy (Lichen Ceramics) and Lukasz Jurgowiak (Of Wood and Willow).
Clay Workshop with Potter Bairbre Kennedy from Lichen Ceramics
Based in the Leitrim Sculpture Centre in Manorhamilton and inspired by the lush landscape of County Leitrim, Bairbre Kennedy creates colourful, light pottery bringing a hint of opulence to functional pottery. View Bairbre's work here.
Bairbire held a one-day workshop guiding curious visitors in the art of clay to create a wall plaque or a wall hanging flower holder. All materials and tools were supplied. Participants learned the art of working with clay, exploring the technique of flatware, incorporating drape moulds and a variety of stamps.
Meet the Maker with Lukasz Jurgowiak from Of Wood and Willow
Lukasz Jurgowiak is a basket-maker based in south Sligo, who makes baskets using willow growing wild along the hedgerows, continuing the rich tradition of basket-weaving in the Irish countryside.
Lukasz demonstrated his unique skills in weaving willow and basket making in The Dock Arts Centre. Viewers had the chance to interact with the materials and try their hand at some of the techniques used throughout the afternoon.
This event was funded by the Design & Crafts Council Ireland for August Craft Month 2022.
