in Maker & Designers

Eugene and Anke McKernan, an Irish/German couple have been crafting scarves since 1995 in Co Clare. There, they imagine, design and make woven and knitted scarves. Made from 95% virgin wool and 5% cashmere to give a luxurious soft feel as well as providing optimum warmth. Each design is distinctive and soft to the touch. Using original patterns, plus a multitude of natural textures and harmonious colours, McKernans craft scarves that become loved and lasting keepsakes. Their scarves are made on George Hattersley looms dating back to 1860 and on new state of the art knitting machines.

“Together we design, weave, knit, warp, wind, beam, tie, unpick, mend, sew, link, wash, label, press, iron, steam and, when all is done, we package the scarves and send them out in the world. We love working with our hands and hearts, and it gives us great satisfaction to pass our knowledge down to our apprentices so that the art of textile manufacturing stays alive in Ireland.”

McKernans are proud to be one of the most established scarf designers and manufacturers in Ireland. Woolly or silky, fine or chunky, smooth or textured, they make scarves for every occasion. Using traditional production methods McKernans have stayed true to their core values of sustainable quality and imaginative design producing scarves which consciously differ from fast changing fashion trends and become unique and treasured keepsakes.
